This iconic racing chronograph is intrinsically linked with one of the coolest movie actors of all time – Mr Steve McQueen, who wore one in the film Le Mans. Measuring 40mm across, this is a cool sized watch in a square stainless steel case with pushers on the right side and a winding crown on the left. The blue dial, with its unusual hour markers and red accents is in fantastic (we would say 95%) with matching patina on the hands and hour plots. There is a little lume missing on the 7 o’clock marker. The case is in what we suspect is unpolished condition. The Monaco has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and will come on a strap of your choice from our web store*.
FIRST AUTOMATIC CHRONO
THE CALIBRE 11
Jack Heuer worked in collaboration with Breitling and Buren to create the world’s first automatic chronograph movement which was unveiled in January 1969. It was a race between Heuer et al, Zenith and Seiko who all unveiled watches that year – but Heuer ultimately took the winner’s crown. Early versions of the Monaco were fitted with the Calibre 11, but most have the calibre 12 as per the example offered here.
STEVE MCQUEEN WEARS SQUARE
Through a series of unusual circumstances, McQueen ended up wearing a Monanco for the filming of the film Le Mans. Racing driver Jo Siffert, a Heuer Ambassador, was hired as a stunt driver for the film and he became friendly with the head of the props department Don Nunley. Nunley needed some timing devices and Siffert mentioned Jack Heuer…the rest is history!
